Mapping
This introduction to architectural design studio was an exploration of process-driven iterative design. Remaining completely devoid of scale and program, the objective of this assignment was to gradually translate a two-dimensional map into a three-dimensional sculpture using diagrams, collages, and maquettes.
The original two-dimensional image is a global flight map of commercial airline routes. The map was broken down into its simplest elements through a series of two-dimensional diagrams, and built back up into three dimensions through an iterative series of increasingly three-dimensional collages and maquettes. The final models seek to assign spatial and structural qualities to a sculptural form while retaining the character and essence of the original two-dimensional map.
